Culver
City Middle School: Community
Profile Located just north of the busy LAX Airport and entirely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles, Culver City is a highly developed urban center with a population of 38,320 that is packed into an area of just under five square-miles. The city’s major industries include television and movie production, electronics, and fiscal services. Its largest employer is the Sony Pictures Entertainment (located on the old MGM Studios facilities). The city is a mixture of apartment buildings, smaller homes built in the 1940’s and 1950s, and large commercial boulevards. Culver City is an eclectic combination of diverse people from many ethnicities, income levels, and ages. The local chamber of commerce calls Culver City a “microcosm of the real world” noting that the city includes significant numbers of Japanese, Hispanic, African-American, Armenian, Arabic and Israeli citizens. Culver City Unified School District serves over 6,700 students. Culver City Middle is the district’s only middle school and is located only blocks away from the district’s only high school. Culver City has a very large adult school program, serving over 18,000 students. Culver City Middle School has long had a reputation in the greater Los Angeles area for excellence in curriculum and instruction. In this small, independent district surrounded by Los Angeles Unified School District, schools have a close working relationship with the district office, and therefore, have the opportunity to develop and quickly implement cutting-edge pedagogical practices based on the latest research, including recommendations from Caught in the Middle and Taking Center Stage. |
