Culver City Middle School Principal: Jerry Kosch

Jerry Kosch, principal of Culver City Middle School , has been working with middle school-aged children since he was 18 years old. His love for this age group was discovered on the playgrounds of Redondo Beach , Calif. , where he worked as a recreation leader at various middle schools and found the experience to be rewarding and influential. After earning his B.A. in History at California State University , Long Beach , he decided to become a middle school teacher.

He began his career in education as a substitute teacher and taught middle school language arts and world history for the Torrance Unified School District for 10 years. In addition to his teaching duties, Jerry became involved in virtually every program his middle schools he worked at had to offer, from BTSA support provider to student council advisor, yearbook advisor, peer mediation coordinator, coach, mentor teacher and department chair.

In 2000, Jerry was named Teacher of the Year as a result of the impact he was having on students in the classroom. His current interests in education were first generated in the classroom – social studies curriculum, classroom management, instructional practices, student motivation, cooperative play, and the legal and financial aspects of education.

While teaching in Torrance , Jerry was encouraged to become a school administrator at an early stage in his career. He left Torrance to become an assistant principal at Culver City Middle School . Two years later he was named principal when his predecessor, Patti Jaffe, was promoted to a district position.

Jerry looks to continue the tradition of excellence and special culture that was established by Patti. Furthermore, he looks to build on the outstanding learning environment at the school with interventions of his own. However, it is the teachers of Culver City Middle School that make the school truly special.

Culver City Middle School and its students have a bright future. Jerry is extremely proud to work at such a culturally-rich and academically achieving middle school where the parents, teachers, students, and district office all collaborate to make the school's mission become reality.

A doctoral student at the University of Southern California , Jerry looks forward to receiving his Ed.D. in 2007. When he is not working or attending classes, Jerry can usually be found surfing at Malibu , Manhattan Beach or San Onofre.
