Culver City Middle School: Program

Multi-funded students at Culver City Middle School are provided a coherent and coordinated program that is based on the California State Content Standards and Frameworks and district approved courses of study that address the core curriculum. Representatives from Culver City Middle School serve on all district curriculum committees. The California State Standards are displayed in the classrooms and are addressed daily. All textbooks are aligned with the state content standards and provide a continuum of learning from one grade level to another. Criterion referenced tests as well as alternative assessments are used in each class. Rubrics are used in all curricular areas resulting in more uniform grading. Students are also provided with opportunities to extend their learning beyond the core curriculum through elective opportunities, supplemental programs, and before and after school programs.

The high level of commitment to the application of the interdisciplinary approach is illustrated through the wide range of programs and activities offered. The Student Body election was enacted through a constitutional convention simulation that modeled the election process. Common threads are seen throughout the learning community, which support the learning objectives. Writing, reading across content areas, and technology can be found in all core and elective classes. These efforts are reflected in an overall increase in reading scores. Students are both supported and challenged through heterogeneous class groupings school-wide. All teachers have received on-going training in implementing differentiated instructional techniques to best meet the needs of all learners. Early identification of at-risk learners leads to enrollment in Title I funded proficiency elective courses in reading and math to compliment learning in the core subject areas. This course utilizes technology and carefully chosen software. In our ongoing effort to expand programs to increase student achievement, a school-wide Sustained Silent Reading program (SSR) and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) were implemented. Furthermore, the school instituted a Scholars Program six years ago which has evolved into offering a greater number of students access to an in-depth course of study in core curricular areas.Other academic pursuits outside of the regular school day include Mock Trial sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (2001: 1st Place in the Los Angeles County Junior Division), Science Olympiad (in which we placed), Geography Bee, Science Fair, Math Counts (2003: 2nd place), California Middle Grades Partnership Network competitions, and various essay contests. An after school program  offers a variety of classes such as math and language arts tutoring, drama, comedy club, book club, Japanese language, and art. After school athletics are offered for all students.

Parents and community are an integral part of the school community. Monthly meetings are held with the PTSA, Site Council, ELAC, and Booster Club. The school works closely with local universities such as Pepperdine ,UCLA, and Cal State Northridge.  Support is provided by businesses in the community such as Sony.  The Culver City Police Department works closely with the school through its School Resource Officers. Families and community members aid the school toward high performance by their on-going support for staff and programs..
