Demographics at a Glance

Silverado Middle School staff have high expectations academically and behaviorally for all students. Staff members at Silverado team together to promote positive self-esteem, self-motivation, acceptance of differences and cultural diversity and a sense of responsibility in their students.

SMS is located in a high growth suburban area north of Sacramento, California. The student population at this school is 68% Caucasian, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 4% Asian/Asian American, and 17% mixed ethnic origin including Black/African American, Filipino, Native American and others. Approximately nine percent of the students at SMS qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch, and four percent of the students speak English as a second language.

Student voice has had an important role in the creation of SMS and today that voice continues to be heard. In the planning stages of building Silverado Middle School students played an active role in planning the school facilities, programs and activities. Today students at SMS are involved in the Student Council and are also represented on the School Site Council. Students, parents and teachers participate in Student Led Conferences throughout the school year, and parents and community members are regularly involved in after school, evening, weekend and summer programs which provide opportunities for SMS students to experience learning and exploration in new environments.
