Alvarado Intermediate School: Community

Alvarado Intermediate School is located in the unincorporated city of Rowland Heights, California, in eastern Los Angeles County. Originally inhabited by Gabrieleno Indians, the region was secured and governed by Spain in 1769, and later, by Mexico. In 1845, much of the area was sold to farmer/ranchers John Rowland and William Workman. These two men developed the land into a vast agricultural district filled with citrus, avocado, and walnut groves.

Today Rowland Heights has prospered into a diverse community of approximately 50,000 residents and a broad scope of businesses. The population within Alvarado’s attendance area has grown to include individuals of Chinese, Hispanic, European, Korean, and other ethnicities. Most of the agriculture has long been replaced with health and social services industries, manufacturing, and retail and wholesale trade businesses.

Rowland Heights is a central location for a variety of interests and recreational diversions. It is within one or two hours’ proximity to snow skiing to the northeast, desert golfing and recreation to the east, and surfing and beach-going to the west. There is also the draw of the arts and entertainment in central Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Alvarado Intermediate School is one of three intermediate schools in the Rowland Unified School District. As they continue their education, Alvarado students attend nearby Rowland High School.

Input from the community is always encouraged, and the school has many ways to gather information to enhance our school climate and increase student success. Alvarado builds alliances through parent representation in the areas of English Learner education, GATE, Special Education, and general education at both the site and district levels. Routinely, letters and counseling updates are sent home, scheduling concerns are addressed, and classes are arranged to promote academic advancement in preparation for the demands of high school. Annual parent surveys are administered to involve families as partners in students’ education. For the last three years, Alvarado’s Parent Teacher Student Association has broken district records with 92%, 94.6%, and 102% paid memberships, which for 2003 includes 800 students. Parents actively participate on campus every day.
