John Glenn Middle School of International Studies: Community

John Glenn Middle School (JGMS) is located in Indio , California . Indio rests in the Coachella Valley with a year-round population of approximately 300,000. During our “season” from October to April, our population swells to about one million. Our largest industry in the valley is tourism given our spectacular golfing and tennis weather with notable sporting events such as the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, the Nabisco Dinah Shore Classic, and the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament.

John Glenn Middle School is part of the Desert Sands Unified School District , which has a student population of 24,000. JGMS is one of seven middle schools serving the community. There are three traditional high schools, one continuation high school, twenty elementary schools, an early childhood education center, and one adult education facility. The district is currently building an alternative education middle-high school, an elementary school and another traditional high school.

John Glenn Middle School is proud of the many business and community relationships which have been established and maintained since its inauguration. Many local restaurants, including but not limited to, Red Robin, La Casita, Panda Express, Rubio's, Papa Dan's Pizza and Pasta, and The Cliffhouse consistently provide outstanding food items and gift certificates for celebrations, community events and staff recognition. The most recent notable events include Teacher Appreciation Week, Parent Orientation, Winter Ball, and our STAR testing raffle.

The staff and students have established a community and service policy demonstrating through action its commitment to all the communities of which we are a part. JGMS has been recognized for its innovative programs, teaching excellence, and outstanding student achievement as recipients of several Indian Wells Grants and a National Magnet School Grant for International Studies. Our art, drama and band programs are welcomed additions to local and regional events in the community including the National Date and Tamale Festivals, and our district's Evening of Excellence. Redhawks Live! , our active International Thespians Troupe 88670, had the Winning Sweepstakes Performance at the California Youth in Theatre Day in Sacramento. In addition, Redhawks Live! has a minimum of three productions a year offered at no charge to the community for at least one performance during each production.
