Bernice Ayer Middle School : Students

Bernice Ayer Middle School strives to meet the needs of its diverse student population. The richness of the student body is reflected in the blend of cultures and languages in all classrooms and programs. There are just over 700 students in grades six, seven and eight. Our student population distribution is 70% Caucasian, 26% Latino/Hispanic, 1% Asian, 1% Pilipino, and 2% other. 23% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Over 17% of our students speak English as a second language.

Bernice Ayer Middle School receives students from two California Distinguished Schools with very different populations. Benedict Elementary School has a student population which is 87% Caucasian, while Las Palmas Elementary is a Title I School with a population that is 76% Hispanic/Latino.

Providing our students with experiences that build multicultural awareness and appreciation for diversity is an important aspect of supporting the students' transition to middle school and maintaining a welcoming and nurturing environment for all. All students have equal access to an engaging and challenging curriculum in heterogeneously grouped classes, with built-in supports for students who need additional help. Approximately ten percent of our students are in the Spanish/English Dual Immersion program, which is an extension of the program at Las Palmas Elementary. Students in the Dual Immersion program take 60% of their classes in English and 40% in Spanish. These students make a special contribution to the friendly and inclusive atmosphere at our school.
