J.F. Kennedy Middle School: Students

Kennedy Middle School is committed to excellence, strives for student achievement, and is always geared up to meet the needs of the students. All students are expected to perform at their highest capacity; they receive appropriate grade-level instruction that is rigorous and challenging. Students are willing to step up to the challenge and they do not hesitate to partake in a high level of student engagement and teacher-student interaction.

Kennedy School diligently serves about 700 lively middle school students. The school population of Kennedy Middle School includes 95% Hispanic students, 0.8% Asian, 0.1 % Filipino, 1.4% African American and 3.0 % Caucasian. More than 70% percent of the student population is Limited English Proficient; 17% of our students are from migrant families. Every student attending Kennedy Middle School is provided with free or reduced-price lunch.

Kennedy Middle School devotes strong effort into constructing teacher-student relationships. As advisory classes are connected to students' first period class, students are able to connect to their “homeroom” teacher. Teachers have an in-depth knowledge of their students as people, both academically and socially. A higher level of trust is created between teacher and students.

Kennedy Middle School students are able to participate in sports programs that include basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country and track and field. Sign language for hearing students and keyboarding concepts are also offered. Students have the opportunity to take part in Associated Student Body (ASB). Noon activities are planned by ASB to allow students to participate in fun and challenging activities. Students also participate in the annual Spelling Bee, which allows for academic fun.

Students participate in enrichment activities outside the regular school day. These activities are made accessible to all students. Some of the current enrichment activities available are: Drama Club, Yearbook, Guitar, Drill and Flag, Life Science Club (supported by the ASCEND grant) and MESA , which strengthens and supports the relationship between math and science

Students are exposed to technology in every period. Technology integration is modeled for them through the use of PowerPoint, LCD projectors and other technology formats. Students incorporate technology such as Internet research and PowerPoint presentations into their class presentations, and communicate with teachers via email by logging on to our school website.

Students are constantly being recognized for their individual accomplishments, attendance, citizenship and leadership. Recognition is also provided through Student of the Week and Student of the Month programs.

Kennedy is a student-centered school. Staff has worked diligently to keep students in the classroom by keeping in-house and out-of-school suspensions low. Encouraging appropriate behavior and positively reinforcing students who make good choices are ongoing efforts. Discipline referrals continue to decline at Kennedy.
