Derek Horowitz became principal of Robert A. Millikan Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet in the summer of 2005. Prior to his appointment at Millikan, he served as an assistant principal at Sun Valley Middle School for three years and San Fernando Middle School for seven years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University , Northridge with a major in kinesiology and a minor in science. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from California State University , Los Angeles . Mr. Horowitz comes to Millikan with 21 years of experience in education with Los Angeles Unified School District . Derek is a team player and consistently demonstrates a commitment to improving student achievement through focused intervention. Since coming to Millikan he has instituted the “Stash Your Trash” program to improve student respect for the physical grounds of Millikan, as well as the “Instructional Leadership Team.” This team is composed of classroom personnel (such as the bilingual/Title One coordinator, discipline dean and counselors), department chair persons, and all school administrators. The group meets regularly to resolve instructional issues, improve the educational climate, and lead the school in implementing the mission, vision and plan. Mr. Horowitz also coined the phrase, “Millikan Pride Cannot Be Denied!” which ends announcements and school activities. |
