Robert A. Millikan Middle School serves approximately 2,098 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 from neighborhood elementary schools and other schools far beyond the neighborhood. The percentage of students eligible for free or reduced meals has risen from 35% to 42%. The racial and ethnic make-up of the student body is as follows; 11.9% African American, 0.6% American Indian or Alaska Native, 3.4% Asian, 1.7% Filipino, 35.9% Hispanic or Latino, 0.2% Pacific Islander and 46.2% White (not Hispanic). The school not only glistens in a rainbow of colors on its lockers and buildings but also in the diversity of its student population. Beautiful murals speak to the culture of kindness and caring that permeate the campus. Tolerance and understanding is the message at Millikan Middle School . Eighteen percent of Millikan's students are designated English learners. In the English learner population alone, there are 17 different languages represented. The number of reclassified English learners has shown consistent growth from 3.9% in 2002 to 23% in 2005. The number of EL students has declined since 2001 through reclassification and enrollment. Ten percent of Millikan students are designated special needs and receive special education services. Most students belong to one of the subject-focused academies. A team of teachers works together to plan instructional strategies and activities, culminating projects, and curricular fieldtrips that address the content standards. All students have internet access with computers in every classroom as well as the use of computer labs that include keyboarding, presentational programs, music and video editing and web design software. |
