Rancho Milpitas Middle School : Program

The students attending Rancho Milpitas Middle School are members of one of five academic teams. They receive a core curriculum, as well as electives and physical education. Students also attend an advisory period the first 20 minutes of the day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The advisory does not meet on Wednesdays because students are released early. On Wednesday afternoons, teachers can collaborate with their team members and department members or attend professional growth opportunities.

Students who are not English proficient are members of an English language learners' team. Along with a core curriculum, students on this team spend one period per day in an intensive English language class. Once students have been designated as being English proficient, they are moved to one of the other four teams.

Teachers have common preparation periods and meet regularly. Teachers are able to discuss student progress and student concerns, plan cross-curricular activities, and share ideas and best practices.

Along with the core curriculum, students may either participate in the elective wheel or choose a yearlong elective. The yearlong electives include AVID, student leadership, the yearbook class, band, chorus, art and drama. The electives on the wheel include current events, history in our world, art, drama, math games, environmental science, math skills and technology.

Students benefit from a wide range of support services. The school has a full-time counselor, a part time marriage and family therapist, and a part-time health clerk. In addition, a full-time resource officer helps students who are exhibiting at-risk behaviors by serving as a mentor and confidant. Students are also able to talk over many issues unique to adolescents during the advisory period. Teachers have two binders of resource materials to use during the advisory. Topics from self-esteem to bullying are contained in the binders.
