Gaspar de Portola Middle School: Students The demographics of de Portola Middle School mirror the demographics of the City of San Diego . The school's student population is made up of approximately 1,045 students in the sixth through eighth grades. The school's demographic profile is 46% White, 28% Hispanic, 13% Black/African American, 5% Asian, 3% Filipino, 4% Indochinese and the remainder 1%, a mixture of Pacific Islanders and Native Americans. Thirty-eight percent of the students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. De Portola receives approximately 130 students who do not live in the resident community and are bused to the school. Sixth grade students are scheduled into core groups for three of their classes, with the same teacher in English for two periods and Social Studies for one period. Seventh and eighth graders are scheduled into all classes heterogeneously. English Language Learners and students experiencing difficulty in meeting grade-level standards receive support through literacy and math academies. Every student participates in physical education and science; sixth graders take computer classes. Seventh and eighth graders have one elective period and sixth graders may take band or orchestra if they take physical education during zero period. Students are able to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. They may participate in after-school sports such as lacrosse or field hockey, lunchtime clubs, “Chill on the Hill” lunchtime activities and sports, student government, yearbook, media production, jazz band or drama. The band and orchestra perform twice a year for the student body and there is an annual all-school track meet and lip sync program. |
