McKinleyville Middle School: Community McKinleyville Middle School is located in McKinleyville , California , on the Pacific coast and in the heart of the redwoods. The school lies approximately 285 miles north of San Francisco and 80 miles south of the Oregon border. McKinleyville is a small, unincorporated town of approximately 13,600 citizens with diverse economic demographics. McKinleyville Middle School is part of the McKinleyville Union School District (MUSD) that is comprised of two K-5 elementary schools and one middle school. The district has a population of 1,239 students. Students in the district have access to a traditional educational program or a Spanish language immersion program, a music program, and a variety of sports programs. MUSD is a close-knit educational community. The staff at McKinleyville Middle School is well known for their collaboration and commitment to a strong educational program for their students. Several teachers have received National Board Certification, and many receive County awards and present nationwide. The school's programs have earned many awards, including most recently Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage, CalSTAT Leadership Model Site for Collaboration, and the 2007 California Distinguished School Award. McKinleyville Middle School works closely with the community. The school has an active Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) and School Site Council – one student from each grade level is elected by their peers to serve on the Council alongside community members, parents, and staff. The PTSO is currently working on increasing lunchtime activities in a variety of ways. Parents volunteer in classrooms and help with many of the grade-level and school-wide activities (i.e., Civil War Days, Renaissance Days, Career Day). McKinleyville Middle School is also fortunate to be located near Humboldt State University , providing opportunities for many student teachers and pre-service teachers to collaborate and work with our highly qualified teachers and work with students in a variety of ways.
