McKinleyville Middle School: Students

The students who attend McKinleyville Middle School fall within the following subgroups: 41% eligible for free and reduced lunch; English learners - less than 1%; 77% White; 12% American Indian/Native American; 8% Hispanic/Latino, 2% African American. There are approximately 373 students enrolled at the school.

All students have a three-period block of Core – language arts, reading, and social studies; they also have a period of math, science, PE and an elective. Seventh- and eighth-grade electives include band, art, Spanish, yearbook/print media, technology, student teaching assistant and academic support. Sixth-grade students are enrolled in Building Skills for Success or an academic support class.

Student voice plays an important role in planning and policy making at McKinleyville Middle School . Students have a representative from each grade level on the School Site Council. The Cadre of Leaders, a student leadership organization, plans service learning and other student-body activities. The Principal's Advisory Council meets regularly with the Principal to discuss student/school issues.

Students can participate in many extracurricular activities. They can join a variety of clubs, take part in the annual talent show, play sports (soccer, volleyball, cross country, tennis, cheerleading, golf, basketball and track), perform in the district play, join the Student Council, apply to be a member of the Cadre of Leaders, and run for School Site Council.
