Toby Johnson Middle School : Community Profile

Toby Johnson Middle School is located in Elk Grove, California, 12 miles south of Sacramento . Elk Grove is one of the fastest growing cities in America , and the school district has opened over 15 schools since 2000. Many of our parents work for the State of California in downtown Sacramento , or they work for firms in the Bay Area, which means a lengthy commute to and from work. The school is extremely diverse with a 35% White, 18% African American, 20% Asian, 17% Hispanic, 8% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander and 1% American Indian student population. Based on data from the 2006 school year, 22% of our students qualified for free/reduced lunch, 7% of the students are English Learners, 17% of the students are GATE identified, and 15 different languages are spoken by our families.

The community of Elk Grove, in which our students reside, would best be described as an upper middle class suburban community, though many of the challenges facing urban school districts are starting to be issues in Elk Grove. Toby Johnson Middle School is part of the Elk Grove Unified School District which serves over 60,000 students and is the largest school district in Sacramento County . The district is currently building its ninth high school and middle school, which will both open in the fall of 2008. Currently, over 700 students that reside within the Franklin High School/Toby Johnson Middle School attendance boundary are being redirected to other district schools because the two schools have reached their enrollment capacities.

Toby Johnson Middle School has an active PTO and School Site Council. However, the Associated Student Body (Student Leadership) is the most influential group on campus in terms of impact on school culture and climate. Students provide the leadership for social events, school tours, community projects, and new student orientation on campus.
