Toby Johnson serves a student population of 1,475 seventh- and eighth-grade students. All the students in the school are assigned to one of seven interdisciplinary teams that each serve 215 students. Each team has six to seven teachers, and these teachers “loop” with their students from the seventh to the eighth grade. In addition, within each of the teams, students are further clustered into cohorts of 36 students who spend the majority of their day together. This tightly-structured team concept, along with the seventh-to-eighth-grade looping, ensures that the parent-teacher-student relationship is strong and that the lines of communication are always open. The school uses a number of technologies, including the “School Loop” program , to ensure that parents have timely, accurate data about the progress of their children, and the school is quick to make modifications when individual students struggle. Most of our students (85%) are extremely successful within our innovative 4 x 4 block schedule, and the school has added a new program called “Foundations” to address the needs of our struggling students. Students have access to over 18 different electives on campus, as well as a number of extracurricular activities. Toby Johnson fields teams in volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track and field, and the school has three different musical bands. The drama program offers students a chance to participate in a musical production and our Art, Leadership, Yearbook, AVID, and Video Production classes provide students with a powerful outlet for student expression. |
