Canyon Middle School: Principal

Mark Croghan became the principal at Canyon Middle School in July of 2003. Previously, he had served as Canyon's assistant principal for five years and an elementary school principal for seven years. Mark grew up in California's East Bay Area, attending public schools in Hayward before earning his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley in Anthropology. At Berkeley , Mark was a varsity athlete and active in student government. After graduating from Cal Berkeley, Mark attended California State University, Hayward, earning a teaching credential in Social Studies and Physical Education. Mark began his teaching career in 1976 at a junior high school in Newark, California . While in Newark, he taught history, physical education, Quest, and Opportunity School . During this time, he also taught at Ohlone Junior College and California State University, Hayward. Mark earned his administrative credential in 1987 at the University of San Francisco. In 1991, Mark began his administrative career at Castro Valley Unified School District .

Mark has always had a passion for working with middle school students and the diverse needs that each student brings to school every day. Students respond well to him and he is a visible presence on campus and at school and community events. Students are impressed that he knows them by name and takes the time to listen to their concerns. As a teacher, Mark was active in creating alternative ways for all students to achieve success. Mark leads regular staff development activities to help teachers hone their instructional strategies so that all students can succeed in school and life.
