Canyon Middle School: Program

Canyon Middle School creates a personalized, supportive environment which promotes a student's development. Sixth-grade students are grouped into small, family-like teams to provide positive personal connections between students and teachers. Seventh- and eighth-grade students are grouped into larger teams resulting in the same positive results. A morning, student-facilitated broadcast, “Advisory,” allows for informal time to address student concerns in a non-academic environment and hear important announcements and accomplishments. The Diversity Council includes 120 students and seven staff members who meet twice a month to study a curriculum on cultural differences, acceptance and bullying. Throughout the year, the Council plans events to celebrate Canyon's rich diversity, culminating in Celebration of Diversity Week. The strong counseling program is easily accessible. Students feel safe in the non-judgmental environment and regularly discuss problems encountered in school or home. Peer mediators are trained and assist fellow students in resolving conflicts. Lunchtime offers a variety of activities such as a game room, intramural sports, lip sync contests and library access. Three days a week, parents run the Canyon Garden , where students can have lunch, garden or just relax.

An extensive extracurricular sports program offers students opportunities to play team sports in basketball, football, track and field, softball, cross-country, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, tennis and golf. Most teams are coached by our staff and over 50 parent volunteers. A very active Boosters' Club of over 150 families helps support our extensive after-school sports program with over 500 student-athletes. The dance team and cheer squad are frequently seen preparing for performances. Canyon's choral and instrumental music program are well known for excellence and involves several hundred students in performances and competitions. Activities welcome boys and girls at all skill levels to become involved in after-school pursuits that foster lifelong physical fitness.
