Canyon Middle School: Students

Canyon Middle School (CMS) has a diverse ethnic and socio-economic population of 1,287 students. The student population is 36% Caucasian, 28% Asian/Asian American, 18% Hispanic/Latino, 9% African American and 9% mixed ethnic origin, including Filipino, Native American and others. Approximately 19% of the students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch and 8% of the students speak English as a second language.

CMS provides a safe, student-centered learning environment, which is driven by the desire to meet the needs of adolescents living in a diverse and rapidly changing society. CMS has received the Distinguished School Award twice. The educational program emphasizes academic integrity while making an emotional connection with students. This connection is facilitated by a staff focus on the successful educational growth of all students while modeling the behavior that students are expected to learn. Reflecting research both in Taking Center Stage and Caught in the Middle, Canyon's 1,287 students are organized into interdisciplinary teams within a block schedule to create a personalized educational experience. Intervention programs assist students before school, during the school day, after school and on Saturdays. CMS provides all students with programs of excellence, including an extensive elective program at all grades. The music program is outstanding and over 50% of the student body participates in its various programs. The Athletic Department offers ten after school sports and 30 different teams. Parent participation is extensive during the school day as well as in parent-teacher meetings and classes.
