Edna Hill Middle School: Principal

Eric Prater began his career in the Byron Union School District where he taught fifth grade before moving to the middle school where he taught sixth grade in addition to teaching Algebra to eighth-graders. He successfully piloted a team-teaching approach that became the standard within the middle grades in his district, and was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1995. In 1996, Mr. Prater was promoted to principal in the district and was nominated in 1997 as ACSA's Region 6 Principal of the Year. He participated in the development of interdisciplinary teaming and collaborative learning teams during his five-year tenure as principal.

In 2001, Mr. Prater was selected by the district to transition Edna Hill School from a fifth- and sixth-grade school to a true sixth- through eighth-grade middle school. After a rigorous planning process, Edna Hill Middle School has built a collaborative partnership with the local police department and the Brentwood City Recreation department which supports students from 7:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For the past six years, Mr. Prater continues to build partnerships and the potential of the entire Edna Hill Middle School community. In 2007, he was nominated as ACSA's Region 6 Principal of the Year for the second time in a decade.

Mr. Prater received his bachelor's degree in economics from St. Mary's College of California in 1989. He earned his master's in educational leadership from California State University, East Bay in 1998. He is currently finishing a doctoral program from the University of La Verne in organizational leadership.

When he's not working, Mr. Prater enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
