Edna Hill Middle School: Students

Edna Hill Middle School serves 828 students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Each student is assigned to one of four interdisciplinary teams housing sixth, seventh and eighth graders with approximately 200 students. The sixth graders stay with two team-teachers throughout the day, except for Advisory and PE, and are assigned an Advisory teacher with whom they remain for their three-year career at the school. Advisory is our adult/student anchor for students. This relationship starts early and remains a strong keystone for student advocacy throughout every student's stay at Edna Hill Middle School . Each child must maintain an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and portfolio during their three years. Two times each year, students conduct “student-led” conferences with their parents under the guidance of their Advisory teacher. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-Oriented, and Time Bound (S.M.A.R.T.) goals are established, measured through the course of the year, and revisited continuously through our Advisory program.

Our comprehensive counseling program is designed to address the national standards and provide support for students in need. The model is designed to cast the widest net possible to proactively reach out to students. The academic, career, and social-emotional needs of adolescents are the focus.

Seventh- and eighth-grade students receive a modified Language Arts and Social Studies block of instruction within a teaming structure to allow for interdisciplinary projects to occur within the core instructional day. This flexibility provides students with extra time and attention when necessary.

Edna Hill Middle School has a rich electives program through the performing arts, computer technology, and industrial arts. Additionally, students benefit from zero-period electives, interventions, and additional support from staff. The after-school athletics program is growing each year, with nearly 250 students participating each quarter. Finally, we offer an after-school activities program for students through a partnership with the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department as well as the police department. Over 100 students participate in this after-school program from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program is free to parents.
