Holmes International Middle School: Principal

Valerie Turner became the principal of Holmes International Middle School and Humanities Magnet in the fall of 2005. She has 25 years of experience in urban education, working primarily in California middle schools.

She received a B.S. in Theater Education with a minor in Speech Communication from Illinois State University. Upon arrival in California, she completed a secondary credential in English. Ms. Turner holds several credentials including: English, CLAD, School Counseling, and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration.

Valerie believes whether educators are in the classroom or responsible for an overall school site, collaboration must take place to develop shared, high expectations in order for all stakeholders to focus on academic rigor and meeting the social-emotional needs of students. Through the use of school surveys and data analysis, she has worked with the stakeholders of Holmes International Middle School to support the creation of a parent center, a community service program and a character education program. Asset building is a focus of the professional development program.

During her career in California, Valerie has served as an English teacher, drama teacher, activities sponsor, dean, assistant principal, and principal. Valerie is honored to serve as the principal at Holmes and looks forward to sharing the Holmes Way.
