The students of Holmes International Middle School are members of academic teams that include core academic teachers and elective and physical education teachers. Teachers have common conference periods to participate in common planning, parent conferences and the discussion of student concerns. Every Tuesday, school is dismissed at 1:33 p.m. so that teachers can meet in academic departments or teams and engage in professional development. A second homeroom at the end of the day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays is an integral part of the school program. Teachers ensure that students have recorded assignments in the student agendas, involve students in goal setting, distribute parent communications, and engage in mentoring. The results include improved communication between home and school, as well as academic success. Resource students at Holmes International Middle School are mainstreamed for all of their core academics. They are programmed in classes with both a core academic teacher and a resource specialist. This teacher team works together to plan and implement instruction for the co-taught classes. The Holmes traditional program also offers a School for Advanced Studies program. This program offers a differentiated program for students who are in the GATE program. Teachers receive extensive professional development in gifted education in order to provide GATE students with a differentiated curriculum within the regular classroom setting. In addition to the core curriculum, students have access to an exploratory program that includes AVID elective classes in the seventh and eighth grade, yearbook, Action Lab, chorus, art, Spanish I, Introduction to Germany , geography, and computers. Students benefit from the support services of four full-time counselors, a magnet coordinator, a full-time nurse and school psychologist. Our counselors offer support groups in anger management, grief and self-esteem. |
