The student population of Holmes International Middle School is made up of 1,100 students in the traditional school program and 400 students in the magnet program. The demographic profile is 57% Hispanic, 20% White, 8% African-American, 8% Asian, 6% Filipino, and 1% Native American and Pacific Islander; 18% are English Language Learners, and 60% of the students participate in the free and reduced meal program. Sixth-grade students are members of one of eight academic teams. They are programmed with a team of two teachers for the core academics. Seventh- and eighth-grade students are programmed in teams of four core teachers. Students who require additional academic support in English/ Language Arts or mathematics receive a second hour of instruction in math or language arts. All students are enrolled in a physical education course and an elective if they are not receiving additional intervention during the regular school day. Students have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities as well as academic support programs. Extracurricular activities include noontime sports and intra-district competition such as basketball and cheerleading. Clubs include a choir which has performed at a number of school district functions, United Nations club, drama, chess club, book club and a Korean Language and Culture club. Students can also take advantage of homework clubs before and after school. Students who need academic intervention can participate in intervention classes for mathematics, language arts and study skills after school or on Saturdays. |
