Frank Wright Middle School: Students The population of Frank Wright Middle School is made up of approximately 800 students in grades six, seven and eight. The school's demographic breakdown is 70.5 % Hispanic, 24.2 % White, 2% African American, 1% Asian, 1% Filipino, 1% Other and 0.3 % Pacific Islander. Forty-four percent of students receive Free or Reduced Lunch, and 24% of students are English Learners. Frank Wright is divided into three academic teams for seventh and eighth grade and two additional teams for sixth grade. Each team has one math teacher, one science teacher, one social studies teacher and two English teachers as its members. These teacher teams share students and a common planning period. One sixth-grade teacher from each team is responsible for being the team expert and liaison for the other sixth-grade teachers and the academic department which they represent. This allows students and teachers to know each other well. Teachers have time to work together to develop and improve cross-curricular units, and to discuss how to best meet the needs of the students. Because four teachers share approximately 160 students, there are four perspectives and four adults working to meet the educational needs of students. Each teacher accepts specific responsibility for advocating for and watching over their first-period class, but the team as a whole intervenes, inspires, motivates, and at times provides parent-like support and guidance to the students assigned to them. |
